pruining a maple with multiple trunks

Hi there- This is a japanese maple that I planted about 3 years ago. I am wondering if anyone has any advice on how to shape this tree. PHOTOS http://kvaverka.winkflash.com

1st issue: It seems to me that there are too many trunks growing out of the right trunk. I do not know which ones to prune. Any suggestions??

2nd issue: the tree has become tall and gangly at the top, long stems with few branches. Should I trim this down to create fuller growth??

Thanks so much for any suggestions. I called an arborist in my area (LA) and it was $200.00 for an hour consultation so I thought I would give this a try.

Thanks again!

Kathryn
