Is there any hope for my J. Maple?

We bought a house last Spring - there was a VERY sad looking topped/pollarded(?) tree. I thought I would give it a season to see if it was worth saving. Well, it turned out to be a beautiful - but maimed - Japanese Maple ... but you would NEVER know it by the fro-like prune job. It's just WRONG!

I have been given 4 growing seasons to try and make/prune it into it's proper shape (I love Jap. Maples!). Is it even worth it? Can a Maple regain it's form with some serious pruning? ... Thanks!

Topped is rarely a good thing, but, without a picture, any answer would be mere speculation.

Keep it mulched and watered, let it alone for a few years. Then start looking at cleaning it up a little. Obviously dead growth can be cut out when first observed, of course.
