You probably have a few weeks to decide where to place your trees icoflin.

Your choices are pretty safe for my area. I think they are good for yours.

How to decide what goes where. Personal preference plays a big role but maybe we can have a bit of a conversation and help you come to a decision.

Is your lot more or less a 100 x 100 foot quarter acre square with equal room around the house? If the front or back is significantly larger the Autumn Blaze probably is a better fit there.

A shade tree (the Acer) will block the summer sun more effectively on the south side of your home.

I don't like any life threatening branches growing over my baby's bedroom or where my Mustang is parked. Even if you move in fifteen years someone with a kid or Grand National might move in and you'd hate to cause problems for a rare Buick.

Acer Rubrum, 1/2 the parentage of your Autumn Blaze, generally tolerates more water than either Cornus Florida or Cornus Kousa dogwoods.

The dogwoods are more of an understory tree so I swear they will tolerate more shade than the maple.

The maple obviously grows faster / larger.

Any overhead lines to worry about keeping the maple away from? Any sewer pipes nearby the planting spots in the front or rear?

OK, here's the thing.

October Glory (Specifically that red maple cultivar) will establish faster (on the east coast) than Autumn blaze.

Autumn blaze will grow faster once established.

What this means is that after several years time, the red maple would be larger, denser and look great while the autumn blaze is just getting warmed up.

My advice is always plant a red maple, it's a better, somewhat stronger and better looking and more desirable than half red maple and half silver maple, if your climate/soil will support it. (and it will).

If you don't mind the tree sitting still for a few years then taking off, and don't mind a less dense crown, shorter fall show, sun scald problem in warmer states and usually inferior branch structure, autumn blaze might be the tree for you.
