Keeping a Japanese Maple till it can be planted

How do I keep a bareroot Japanese Maple until I can plant it at the end of April. I live in zone four. The ground is froze until the middle or end of April. The temperature is in the single digits at night and around twenty during the day. I know I have to keep the roots moist and keep it from freezing. How is that done under these conditions? Can it be started in a pot indoors now and then planted outside in april?
