Old Man Winter Not Nice-Please Help!!

I made a potentially fatal error. I did not dig out my Japanese maple after a blizzard. I think my husband made matters worse with the snow blower!!

My tree is approx. 2 1/2' tall x 3 1/2' wide. I don't know the cultivar. The split is at the middle and about 3 " long. The branch was still partially attached and I quickly went out and used the only thing I had on hand-electrical tape. I know this is not a permanent solution and I might have lost the tree, but it was the only option at the time. I know the electrical tape could eventually do more harm and has to be removed. I read about grafting tape and would like to give it a shot. What do I have to lose at this point?! Should I wait a bit before I switch to the grafting tape?

Can anyone give me any advice/options? Has anyone out there had success with repairing a Japanese maple? I'm sick over this and would love to try anything possible to save at least part of this beautiful tree!

Thanks for any help.

Jo
