There is also a red stemmed vine maple (Acer circinatum) called 'Pacific Fire' that has large (ish) yellow green leaves.

That does sound like it, as far as the bark.

It seemed like summertime on the show, so I was thinking that it had yellow leaves instead of the usual green or red of the Japanese Maples. Maybe I am wrong and this was a fall planting ... ??

I'm trying to find more about the show, and maybe another air time for that episode, but to no avail so far.

I also went to the King of Dirt site and used their contact form to ask ... but haven't heard back yet.

Could you tell if the leaves were possibly sun scorched from the summer? Both of the above are possibilities. I have not seen Pacific Fire in leaf, but I have seen it dormant and it has extremely vibrant bark. Also heard it burns around here even if shaded.

my sango kaku's leaves start out a light green in the spring, during the summer the leaves turn a yellowish green.
