The trunk to this 2nd year crimson queen is in question. The tree seems to be doing WONDERFULLY other than this. The texture is the same as the rest of the trunk, but should I be concerned about scalding or anything else?

That's typical. Crimson is grafted onto different Japanese Maple's rootstock.

What Lou said. I'd be concerned about that stake being tight against the trunk. I might be inclined to move it further out (if it's needed at all) just to allow the trunk more movement. tj

Thanks lou. Funny you should mention that tj. I removed it at the end of fall but got concerned about whether the top 1/3 of the tree was strong enough to hold it's weight. It seemed to be leaning a bit. from that angle you can't tell, but it's not actually touching the trunk. Do you still think I should move it out?

'Crimson Queen' is a pendulous, weeping form. The only purpose for staking this tree is to ecourage a more upright growth habit before allowing the wider spreading, weeping habit to take over or for the ease of the grower in handling and shipping the plant (upright is easier to transport compared to wide/spreading or weeping). It can be removed at any time.

Thanks a lot. Another question- is it ok to leave it potted? I don't really have a place in my yard that isn't too sunny for it.
