Given the options, I'd choose summer into early fall. Sap is not rising at that time so 'bleeding' is not an issue and I find it easier to evaluate the tree's appearance and assess what needs to be removed when the tree is in leaf. You could have pruned earlier - December/January - but I wouldn't do so now.

That's a shame that I missed my window of opportunity. But I guess it's one less chore to do this spring. Thanks for the reply.

I accidentally knocked a small branch off my Fireglow in my front yard while laying down mulch a week ago and the sap started flowing. I hope I didn't do anything significantly harmful. Oops

Your fireglow will be fine. It will flow for a few days (especially warm days), but it will be fine. I walked into one of our paperbark maples in the dark (taking dog out, looking at the stars), and broke a branch. It's fine, and so will be yours.
