Choosing a variety of red Japanese maple

I'm trying to choose a red variety of Japanese maple for a sunny location. I'd like one with a compact shape that doesn't get too big. I'd prefer one that isn't too hard to find. Of course I'd like one that is robust and beautiful. I live outside Portland, Oregon. I would really appreciate any suggestions. Thanks much! Jen

Look for 'Shaina' or 'Fireglow'. Both are quite compact, tolerate full sun well (and maintain color) and are relatively easy to find at any nursery that carries a decent selection of Japanese maples.

Of the two, my personal choice would lean towards the 'Fireglow' - I like the form and growth habit better. 'Shaina' is a bit too much like a lollipop on a stick for my tastes - too even and regular in shape. And the coloring of Fireglow is gorgeous.

How big is too big (height & width)? Do you like the more upright & palmatum (like the Fireglow) or the more bush-like and dissectum types (such as Tamukeyama, Crimson Queen and Red Dragon)?
