Bloodgood is what you need... trees don't stop growing. When you see the average size of a tree, that is usually at 10 years. At 20 years it'll be double, etc. A lot of my japanese maples are dwarfs and their size is 6 x 3 in 10 years. In 20 years they should be 12 x 6 give or take a little. Even larger at 30 years.

Thanks for the suggestions. Found a cultivar called Crimson Prince, which is supposed to be an improvement of the bloodgood. Grows faster and bigger as well.

I would love to see pictures of a fully mature bloodgood at 30- 40 ft. Have never seen one before. All the ones I have seen are small trees nowhere near the purported growth sizes mentioned above. thx.

While trees do continue to grow as long as they are alive, they also have a genetically programmed size they will attempt to achieve. As they get closer to this size, the slower growth will be. So it is erroneous to assume that a 20 year old JM will be double the size of a 10 year old tree - it all depends on the size of the specific cultivar and the suitability of the growing conditions. JM's in my climate tend to grow faster and larger than do their counterparts in harsher parts of the country and it is not uncommon to find quite large, mature Bloodgoods in older gardens but 40' is still pushing it for ANY Japanese maple. Most full sized cultivars will top out at 25-30' with the straight species maybe a bit larger.

I am new to this whole planting tree thing, I planted 5 maple seeds( not sure what kind of maple) I started the seeds in a small pot and they r growing nicely. But they are starting to get big and r falling over. And I'm afraid this will kill them. What can I do to support the baby trees so they will grow tall and strong. Thank u for your help.
