fertilizing ... what's best, how much and when...

Hello all. Those Japanese maples I planted in late summer last year are just barely beginning to leaf out. I'd appreciate suggestions as to fertilizing. I typically use Osmacote or Plant Tone on most of my in-ground plants. Would these be recommended fertilizers? Any others that you would personally recommend? (Have read that JMs are light feeders; as a result, would the slow-release type, like Osmacote, be best?) Finally, and probably the most critical, when should I apply the fertilizer?
(I'm assuming I should pose questions about fertilizing hydrangeas and crape myrtles on their respective sites; however, feel free to provide advice regarding those plants.)
Many thanks.
