Stake?

Hello all,

I recently planted a potted, 6-foot Acer Griseum in my sidewalk strip. The site is somewhat protected with some other mature trees along the street. I am debating if I should stake it or not. It seems stable right now but I don't know how it would do with heavy winds. The other problem is that it branches from a single stem to 3 stems about a foot off the ground. If staking is recommended, how should I stake it? Should I support the main stem right where it splits or support one or more of the branches? It seems strange to stake branches.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Bart
