2 Japanese Maples?

I have a Japanese Maple growing in my yard, zone 7, and it looks like 2 different trees. Can anyone help on this? Do I need to cut back one or what do you suggest?

If they're truly joined, likely the green part is the root stock overgrowing the grafted red part.
If so, and if it were my tree, the green part would be gone this weekend.

It could be just as jean described however I see no reason to remove either tree. The green (rootstock) portion certainly doesn't seem to be weakening the red (grafted portion) so no horticultural reason to remove at this time. And from a distance it looks like just two different types of JM's growing adjacent to each other.

If it doesn't bother you, just leave them alone. If it does, then the green is the portion to remove.

Thanks so much for the help. My husband cut the green out of the maple and it does look so much better.
