Katsura Wins, Hands Down

We have a mini-arboretum open to the public, a series of garden rooms ,ponds and waterfalls, jam packed into 1/2 acre. Amongst thousands of varieties of woody plants, perennials, tropicals, we grow many many acers and about 30 varieties of jap. maples. 'Favorites' are always subjective, but I do want to share with others that if I could only have ONE non-red Japanese maple, it would be Katsura, hands down, no contest. When it first leafs out in spring, it essentially appears to be 'in full bloom', covered with tiny rusty reddish nascent leaves. As these open out, the tree is a mass of burnt orange. When the tree is fully leafed out, it is more golden than Orange Dream, and from above, the newer leaves and edges of the larger leaves are flushed rust. That is how it remains today, 5/20, in Z.5,Boston. It will eventually go lime green and green, but not for quite awhile.

An amazing tree.

best,
