Help - Insects on my JM!

aaronstree

Hi - new to the forum so please forgive me if this post is in the wrong place...

I have a Japanese Maple that has recently received some unwelcome visitors in the form of insects. I have pictures, close-ups but I am not seeing a place to post photos here.

The bugs are on the trunk only and in clusters. They are about the size of lady bugs but don't show any head or tail, have a shell that is black and white and kind of stripped, and they just seem to be attached to the trunk of the tree. I don't see any legs either.

When I try to pull one off they squish readily and leave a white colored patch on the tree trunk where they were.

What do you think that they may be? And of course what should I be doing to help rid my JM of these visitors?

I have been checking this tree our closely so this is a new infestation that I am sure was not there two weeks ago.

TIA (Thanks in advance)
