Split in Autumn Blaze Trunk

Hi there,

I have this spot on the bottom of my Autumn Blaze's trunk and wanted to verify if it was a sunspot or something else, and whether or not it would damage my tree in the long run. The tree was planted in April 2009, trunk wrapped for the winter, and it has wonderful leaves and seems to be thriving. Thanks for your help!

It looks like it's healing. It could be some other wound although these freeman maples are prone to cracking.

It does look to be healing but it also looks to be planted too deep. Pull the mulch away from the trunk and pull the dirt back and see if you can see the root flare. (where the roots start to flare away from the trunk).

Is that a raised flower area put around the tree after it was planted?

Personally I think it will recover also btw.
