sudden death japanese maple

Have a 30+ japanese maple that was doing very will until this past fall. Did not have the great color we usually get and not as many leaves. The only thing that has changed is that our neighbor's oak tree, 100+ years old, fell on our yard quite close to this maple. The limbs were 60 feet long and 4' around, causing what I call a sonic boom. This was in July. The tree guy who removed the oak said there was nothing wrong with the maple, however, this fall we did not have the great color and now it is May and nothing, no leaves. Could the boom have caused it to die or maybe too much water in the ground from the othe tree being removed? I'm giving it some time but I really don't think there is any hope for this tree. Unfortunately it's the focal point of our small backyard and the tree guy says we can't plant another tree there. Any suggestions?
