TINY Japanese maple help!!

I found this forum and I'm so glad I did. You all seem to be just the right people to give me advice on the matter at hand

Today I felt compelled to save a very tiny Japanese maple from the lawn mowers. It can't be more than two inches tall. I found it on the ground underneath its parent and just felt absolutely terrible about letting a tree like that die.

I scooped it up and for lack of a better pot at the moment have planted it in a cup. I'm extremely amateur at bonsai and wanted to try to bonsai it (or at least keep it in a pot, I'm active duty Air Force and I move around a lot!)

I really don't even know if I've done the right thing. I knew it had no chance where it was and figured it would have SOME chance in a pot. so I scooped it up, original soil and all and put it in cup. I watered it sparingly because the "pot" has no drain holes and I wanted to avoid root rot. What do I do next? I don't even really know how to care for the thing. I just acted on impulse!

Help a newbie please?

Thanks!
