Unwanted Maple Seedlings

I love the giant maples in our neighborhood and my own Japanese maple. But unwanted maple seedlings are the curse of springtime. There are hundreds of them everywhere -- in the flower beds, in the lawn, under the shrubs. Pulling each one by hand is so much work. Would it be safe to apply a closely targeted spurt of Roundup to each one (except for the ones growing in the lawn)?

It's too late for this year, but next year apply Preen liberally to the areas where the seedlings are a problem, including the lawn. Preen works by preventing seeds from sprouting. I'd use Roundup (carefully) or pull by hand.
