A watering dilemma

Can someone help me figure this out? Ten years ago we put in a garden, and planted a Sango Kaku and a Bloodgood near some lace-cap hydrangeas. The area gets some summer sun and the hydrangeas began to wilt, so in addition to the regular watering (they're on an automatic spray system) I added a soaker hose three times a week during the summer. (We get no summer rain.) All did well.

Then, because the hydrangeas were big and healthy, I discontinued the soaker hose last summer. Two of the three hydrangeas and both trees died, and in retrospect I figured that it must have been because they'd gotten less water than in previous summers. I've replanted the hydrangeas and maples, and all look fine now. THE DILEMMA: should I go back to the additional water with the soaker hose during the summer, or assume that unless something starts to wilt they'll do fine without it?
