glowing embers - sudden leaf tip browning

Our glowing embers japanese maple was planted in our yard two months ago, and has been doing wonderfully till the past week. We were out of town for a few days and when we returned we noticed many of the leaves had discolored at the tips, most prominently at the top of the tree, but also working its way down towards the bottom branches.

We can't see anything other than a few spider webs, and then this strange insect under one of the branches.

We live in Southern California and have not had any extreme weather fluctuations the past week. It's been overcast often, though the temperatures have been heightening as summer takes hold.

I'd guess it is insufficiently acidic soils. SoCal tends towards alkaline soils and this will typically manifest itself in JM's by showing what looks like leaf scorch.....or pretty much the symptoms your tree is displaying. I'd attempt to correct this as much as possible, ideally using some sort of sulfur application (which takes time to take proper effect) or cottonseed meal (also will take some time) or watering thoroughly with a dilute solution of MirAcid - all of these are soil acidifiers. In the meantime you can water with a vinegar solution: 1-2 Tbsp of vinegar to a gallon of water.

The tree continues to suffer. Still the top leaves continue to brown and dry up. See picture links. ANY SUGGESTIONS?
