Watering my Tamukeyama JM

I am trying to take care of my JM and read on another post of a way to water that I wondered might be good for my Tamukeyama that is planted in full sun.

Fill a plastic gallon milk jug that has a pin hole in the bottom with water and let it slowly water the plant.

Questions:

Would 1 gallon be enough?
How often?

I have tried to gage the moisture by using my finger but am concerned that I cannot feel down deep enough to really gt a good idea. The surrounding plants are more tolerant of fluxuations in water (I think).

Thanks for any thoughts and patience for a beginner gardener.

And yes I know it is too close to the corner. I am planning on moving it later. After it loses all of its leaves? It needs 12 feet around, correct?

Gallon is probably not enough. You need to keep the root zone evenly moist throughout and to the proper depth (10-12" minimum). A gallon jug with a pinprick opening is not going to afford a very even distribution of water, either. Much like using those totally ineffective fertilizer spikes :-)

Try using a soaker hose (they have ring hoses intended specifically for trees) or a drip with 2-3 emitters. You will have to experiment with frequency and duration. There are too many variables involved to be more precise.
