| Hello, I just planted two 1 1/2" Red Sunset Maples in Calgary, Alberta May 11. It looks like they had flowered before I bought them and I can see buds but they don't seem to be emerging into leaves yet and I am worried that maybe they didn't make it. I bought them from Home Depot and were apparantely brought in from BC. I have staked them to keep them stable and have made sure they have had plenty of water. It has been fairly cool since they were planted so maybe they just need more time? Is there any way to tell if they are still ok or do I just have to ride it out? How long should I wait before deciding if they haven't made it? Home Depot will take them back if they have died but they don't have any more I have been waiting to get my hands on these trees so I am in no hurry to give up if there is still hope.
Thanks for any help! |

| I'd say they're toast buddy. Mid-June is time to take them back. You should see dead buds on the tree at this point assuming they're gonners. They'll be shriveled up and not red, probably black. Here's a link I found to Acer rubrum twigs. You can see the flowers present and the buds still in tact. Those are the buds you should still have if it's alive. There's a magnifier, just click your mouse. Dax |
