The south side would be my last choice for planting! Japanese maples are by nature woodland understory trees and while many varieties can tolerate full sun, all are happy in at least partial shade. And if given the choice, protection from the hot afternoon sun is preferred and is pretty much required for any of the variegated forms. Is there a spot on the east or north side of the property that could be utilized?

Shirazz is also not a very robust selection of JM. IME, it tends to have issues and is not always very long lived. Flashy and attractive but maybe not the best choice.

It's tempting, but I kind of figured that this would be the problem. There are many places elsewhere in the yard to put it, but aesthetically it would look best in the front.
