Red Maple limbs dying

I have 3 red maple trees in my yard and they all appear to be struggling. They are all starting to get dead limbs and on two the bark is cracking all on the trunk. One of the trees is forked at the bottom and one half has died and the bark is flaking off. Will the other side also die? Is there anything I can do about the dying branches?

Post some photos of the trees. Be sure to include a closeup of where the tree trunk meets the ground and and holes in the trunk that you may find. Age of the trees and your location would be helpful to know too.
