Pruning a Japanese maple

chundered

I was given a nice Japanese Maple by my parents, who got it at a benefit sale. I think it was donated by a hobby grower. As a result, I don't know the variety but I don't believe it is a dwarf variety. I have a spot that it would look great in but over the long term, it won't have a huge amount of room to grow. Is it a bad idea to plant it there and prune it to keep it relatively small?
