The problem that you have with this situation is that it's difficult to keep a large tree (if that is what you have) to a small size by pruning. You'll be pruning every time you turn around. What happens is that you are not keeping the root system pruned as well so it continues to develop and becomes quite large. This will fuel the top growth and you'll have trouble keeping up. One way around this is to grow it in a large pot. Essentially you will be doing bonsai on a large scale. This will limit the size of the root system and the tree. You will of course have to be vigilant about watering your tree year round if it is grown this way.
