Hi Nicky, Yes... acer palmatum 'Tamukeyama' is a laceleaf weeping japanese maple that can be grown in a pot. If your not well versed in growing trees in pots maybe you should start out with a small one. Either way do some research on things like potting medium, tree size verses pot size, siting, water requirements etc. and eventually root pruning. You can do it, its done everyday. 'Palmatum' refers to the species of maple and describes the leaf shape - palmate or hand-shaped - not the growth habit of the tree. Japanese maples can be both upright or weeping but nearly all weeping forms are considered to be dissectums with narrow, lacy, highly divided foliage. These will most often produce that umbrella shape you like and generally do not get to be large trees. Quite suitable for growing in a container, provided you observe the care container-grown trees require.

There are many different red, laceleaf, weeping JM's. Tamukeyama is only one choice.......you could also consider Crimson Queen, Red Dragon, Red Select, Inaba Shidare and Garnet, as well as a bunch that have mostly red foliage like Orangeola or Baldsmith. All are great trees. It's just a matter of picking the one you like best!
