I can't tell much from the first photo as it is so blurry. The second one looks like someone hit it with a lawnmower or a baseball bat. What is the diameter of the trunk? I don't see any trunk flare at the base - how thick is that mulch at the base of the tree? You really don't want more than a thin layer of mulch touching the trunk.

The mulch at the base is only about 1" thick, then becomes thicker as you go out further...probably 3-4 inches at the thickest.

I know it was not hit by anything, though.

As far as trunk flare goes, we didn't get any flare on our other trees until they were in the ground for about 5 years. This one has not been in quite as long.
