Pruning maple whips

I bought several maple whips, 30" in length. How do I prune these whips, so the trees form into nice shaped trees, how high off the ground, what season,and so on?

Ideal time is in the fall but norammly although some may say otherwise prune back 1/3 of the top and then selectively prune each fall until you get the tree you desire.

tcain, im a little confused why you would want to prune whips? Are they ap stock grown for grafting?
