| I planted this japanese maple last year. It had leaves to the very top. So far this year, the top doesn't have any leaves. The tree has leafed out, the top has what looks like leaf buds, and when I scratch it, it's green, so it's not dried branches. It has been like this for about a month. Do I prune off those branches, when? Will I wreck the tree? Sorry I don't have a better picture.

| Karen, Yes, go ahead and prune off the branches that have no leaves. They will eventually die completely. You won't hurt it to do so. JMs frequently have limbs that die back, especially if they're just transplanted or if there was an especially bad period of stress (drought, freezing). Just remove them and new ones will grow!
