Tree Prognosis - fungus leaf infection

I have a red maple about 40' tall. 90% of leaves are partially black, beginning with spots then gradually taking over the leaf. Apparently due to our very wet spring. The lady at the garden store indentified it as anthracon____ something. Anyway, I can't spray this tree manually as it is too big, and I can't afford a pro to do it. She said the leaves would die off and be replaced, but I'm assuming that is after I treat it, which I can't. If I don't treat this, will the tree survive and will new leaves grow in over the summer? Thanks.
