Both 'Bloodgood' and 'Emperor I' have the potential of reaching 20+ feet overtime and with an equal spread. There is a very subtle distinction between the two that would take an expert to discern in passing :-) 'Emperor I' is reputed to hold its color better in more southern climates and is slightly later than 'Bloodgood' to leaf out but otherwise, Joe Homeowner would have a tough time sorting out which was which at a glance. 'Fireglow' is a more compact tree and would be my first choice for that close a location to the house. It should top out around 15', give or take, and with a smaller spread as well.

If you want tried and true, go with Bloodgood. The reason you see so many around is because they are pretty reliable. I have a neighbor who has one tucked into a corner of his house, probably 3' from the foundation and it is filling the corner nicely. It has probably been there over 10 years. It would take a long time for it to get to its full potential, and they can be trimmed, shaped over time. I have had some problems with Fireglow. I planted it last year and the dieback this year was significant. In fact, I don't know if it is going to make it. My Emperor I has been beautiful, but it also had some dieback this year, although not as significant. My Bloodgood looks great.
