Coral Bark Japanese Maple

I live on the CA coast (~1 mile from the water). I have an 8' or so coral bark japanese maple in a half wine barrel; it gets afternoon sun, but definitely full sun in the PM. I've been watering it twice a week.

Some of the leaves are yellowing and some up at the top are looking kind of brown around the edges. We had one very hot spell of a few days, but other than that, it's been mostly in the 60's but *very* windy, day after day.

Any idea what the problem is? Should I water more? Thanks for your help.

Poke around in the tub to make sure it is evenly moist throughout, without large dry zones or sogginess.
