Disease - wet wood or borer? Rcky Mtn Glow Maple

We have a Rocky Mtn Glow Maple (Acer grandidentatum 'Schmidt'). We planted it 2 years ago (it was 15# when we bought it).

This summer, all the leaves dried up, got all crinkly and are falling off. See: {{gwi:1043217}}

We also noticed it is leaking near the bottom half of the tree. It is quite sticky. See:

The nursery said to:

1. Don't fertilize it

2. Water it every 7-10 days

3. Cut a little in the damaged area and see if you can see any borers.

I scraped off some of the bark in the wet area, it is quite soft wood and oozing. Under the outer bark it was bright orange. I didn't want to damage the tree, so didn't dig down any farther. I didn't see any insects or anything.

Is there anything I can do? Should I try to "cut out" the orange parts of the tree that are oozing? Is this just wetwood, or do I have a different disease?

Any help is truly appreciated. We love this tree and would like to get it healthy.
