Problem with my Maple

First of all, I know little about trees and other than it's a maple.
I have no idea what kind. It looks as if the tree has a split in it, some of the wood no longer covered by bark is soft. Is this green long for this world? Anything I can do to save it?
Any help would be appreciated,
