small leaves on maple saplings

Last Fall I transplanted three maple saplings (6 ft tall) from the woods to my back yard. I wasn't able to take a very large root ball, but this Spring they leafed out OK but the leaves have stayed very small - 1 to 1 1/2 inch instead of 3 or 4 inches. What does that mean? Is the tree struggling? Not enough root growth to support leafing out? The small leaves are still green and good looking. Is there anything I should do to help it out? Cliff
