What to do about my Japanese Red Maple
| | |
Posted by larrylwill (My Page) on Mon, Jun 30, 08 at 20:33
I bought this house last year. It has a very nice Japanese red maple. I believe its been planted too close to the house. It appears to be 5" in diameter. What can or should I do about it. The sidewalk is already been pushed up from I believe the maple. I plan to remove or fix the sidewalk. Can I leave the tree or do I have to move it. I think its too big to move by myself and too expensive to have moved. Suggestions please.

| I would keep the tree, but I would prune it nicely to open up the bottom of the tree. This will allow you to enjoy the trunk/shape of the tree and make it look less like a hairy monster! That whole area will feel lighter and more open. Make sure you read up on pruning before attempting it on a tree like that. DO NOT "top" the tree of cut branches off half way. You want to preserve the natural form of the tree. Regards, K4 |

| I appreciate that advice. I just read a tutorial with pictures on pruning one. It looks like I have to wait until Jan or Feb to do it. It also look like I should begin to shape it also. Would you like to make any suggestions on what branches I should remove? thanks again |

| That is quite a nice tree! I agree with the pruning and I would not move it, dig it up, or other... I'm relatively new to Japanese Maples, so I'm not really comfortable directing you on specific pruning methods, however, much advice can be found online. One approach would be to find a picture of one you really like and shape your tree similarly. Remember that MAJOR pruning should be done over a couple of years so as not to shock the tree... Any idea how old that one is? |
