Watering maple saplings

Hi Everyone,

We just planted a bunch of red maple and sugar maple saplings. Each are 2-3 years old, up to about 2 feet tall. We are in central New Hampshire near the White Mountains. They are planted in an open field and therefore receive full sunlight.

We have questions about watering them:
1. How frequently do you think we should water them?
2. For how long should we water each time?
3. How much volume should we add each time?

We are setting up our automatic irrigation system now so any tips you have would be appreciated!

    1. When you stick your finger into the root mass up to the second knuckle and the soil feels either hot or dry.

    2. Long enough so the entire root mass gets saturated.

    3. Enough to accomplish #2.

You see, we don't know your soil, so no specific numbers can be given for your questions. You have to learn your soil's parameters.

    Are the trees mulched?
