Tree disease

I have a Maple in the front of my home that is diseased. I don't know much about trees but would like to know if there is any thing I can do to help it out. It is also dripping on my lawn and killing the grass near where it falls. The visible disease is only where the tree has been trimmed or when the ice storm this winter tore branches off. The tree hasn't been trimmed for 3-4 years according to a tree service I contacted to do it(they haven't yet done so). I have pics posted on photobucket. The address is linked. I have considered having the tree removed and replaced with a smaller one as it is shading a part of my lawn to the point of killing it. I would have liked to wait to do that though as it is expensive. If the disease is going to cause more damage to my lawn or is incurable that is the path I'm leaning to.

Here is a link that might be useful: pics
