Looks like Sugar Maple, 2 years old, appoximately 17 feet tall,7-8 inches in diameter. I noticed the leaves weren't healthy and checked the bark. I found a lot of bark rotted away leaving only approximately two inches of healthy bark. I pulled the rotted bark away and painted the surface. I'm watering it daily, fertilized it and covered the base with a good bed of straw to help retain moisture in this South Carolina heat. Can this tree survive or are my efforts futile. What else if anything can I do?
