Will approach grafting work on maples?

I was wondering. Will approach grafting work on maples? Also can it be done with the scion still in a jug or glass of water?

Tonight I took a branch off a Sugar Maple in a relatives yard and I was going to try to graft it onto a Silver Maple trunk. We'll I've grafted this tree many times before but none ever took.

So can I leave it in the jug of water I have it in and use the approach grafting method? Or does it have to attached to its own roots for it to work? Most things I read about approach grafting is both plants are on their own roots at first. Please let me know. Thanks.
