We have had a lot of rain here in the Northeast all spring/summer. My Japanese Maple has been in the ground about 4 years and was probably 3 feet high when I bought it. Just a few days ago all the leaves have curled up. They've not turned any colors yet, just curled up. I don't see any insect issues. I've got lots of hostas planted around the base of the tree and they've been there since I planted it and have never caused a problem. Should I remove the hostas? Or do you think this problem is caused by all the rain? Thanks.

If your maple tree has Sooty mold it feeds on the sticky substance (honey dew) left by aphids and scale insects. I think it may be the cause of the curling leaves. It can be treated easily.

Does the tree get full sun? I know we've had a lot of rain and not much sun, but Japanese Maples seem to be prone to scorching in this area. If they are turning black-ish and curling it might be scorch from too much water followed by high heat from the sun.
