Japanese maple - is it stone dead?

Our crazy spring weather (high 80's days, followed later by hard 24degree frost), wrecked havoc with my two Japanese maples which had come into leaf during that heat spell.

One of them has new leaves coming from the near the base and the other one has none; but the trunk is showing some green at the base.

Question: On the one with new leaves - do I just cut off the trunk until I get down to the leaves, or leave it and hope that next spring it will give leaf out.

With the other one (no leaves), is it possible it may come to life next spring, or should I just dig it out and replace it?

Thanks!

June
