Chalk maple?

I have two quick questions about chalk maples. I've looked at them online, and they seem to be a sugar maple in miniature with smooth grey bark and a more southern growing range. But the descriptions say they're understory trees and very shade tolerant. I'd like to plant one in full sun on deep, sandy river-bottom soil, zone 7. Do you think it would do well there? Also, what kind of growth rate does a healthy chalk maple have?

If the descriptions say its an understory tree. it's unlikely to do well in full sun. If you want to experiment, here's your chance.

Ours are perfectly happy in full blistering sun with lots of competition. Growth rate has been up to 2.5'/year some years. Other years 1'/year. Have not had them long enough to but more specific on growth than that.

I would expect you to have no problems outside of maybe watering when very dry.
