My landscaper is suggesting planting a weeping form of Japanese Maple as understory under the canopy of an established Red Maple. I am having a hard time growing things under the Red Maple as it is. Will a Japanese maple have enough root room for its own root system?
Follow-Up Postings:

I am not an expert but my red maple hogs everything around it. I do not think my JM's would survive under my red maple.

After some years I cut my two 'Franksred' down because they were beginning to dominate. Large-growing kinds like Norway, red and sugar maples are for large spaces, where a big blank area beneath the tree is not a drawback.
