Japanese Maple - Leaves turning brown

I've seen a few similar posts on this subject, so forgive me if this is a repetitive question.

I planted my Japanese maple 'Crimson Queen' three years ago in my backyard. It seemed to be doing very well, and put on a lot of new growth this Spring. However, I have noticed that a lot of the leaves are brown and dry. I started noticing this about a month ago, and it seems that each day, there are more leaves that are dying.

I have always been careful not to overwater since my tree is essentially planted in a "clay bowl". The native soil is clay, but has been amended with organic planting mix. The weather here in Dallas has been very hot and dry, much moreso than the previous summers that I had the tree.

Can anyone tell by the pictures if the browning leaves are a result of over- or underwatering? I'll be sick if I lose this beautiful tree :(
