Thanks for the recommendations. I had never even heard of Shantung maple. The trident maple may be too small for what I want in this space.

But I guess if I get a Shantung maple I will try it in another spot. The spot I have in mind really would do better with something more upright--moderately columnar or narrowly pyramidal. Ideally a sugar maple cultivar would probably be best, but I don't know if there are any good options. In Jacobson I see what could be a possibility or two, but the descriptions are not full enough for me to really know. I have tried to search on-line, but haven't found any candidates that seem right.

For some reason most--or is it all--of the generally available cultivars of red maple are a basic red or dark red color, and that is not what I want in this space. When I started my search I thought I would have a lot of choices. I am surprized I haven't been able to find any obvious fit.

I may just go with a regular sugar maple and prune it to keep one central trunk for as high as I can, and then assume that in my lifetime it won't outgrow the space.

Bingo! This one seems to fit exactly. And going back to Jacobson, I see it described there. The frustrating thing about Jacobson is he often says "good fall color," but doesn't say what color. But here he does describe it. Funny how I missed this one--there is nothing like a live person to help. Thanks--now I will have to find where I can get one.
