Japanese Maple's leaves drying out

I bought a Japanese red maple a few months ago and planted it in a planter on the balcony. It was doing fine the first couple of months when it was pretty cool and rainy here, but during the last 1-1.5 months its leaves have started drying out. My balcony has south exposure so it gets a lot of sun/heat but I water it regularly. Any ideas what could be causing the leaves to dry and what I can do about it?

Running short of water.

When you water regularly, what does that mean? How often? Also how much?

Anyway, as said, it needs more.

Wind and heat can do that too...
