New branches after an accident with JM

Hi. I have had my Japanese maple for over 15 years. Someone fell into it and busted all of the laceleaf limbs off but one. We propped that one and doctored it, but it died this past week. It has one limb from the parent tree coming off of the bottom that is not laceleaf. That is currently its only limb. My question is, what are the chances that my tree will grow more laceleaf branches? Also, do I need to do anything special tot he busted trunk to help it during the winter. Any insight would be helpful.

If no dissectum growth by now their never will be you have the root stock growing and a busted disease prone tree. Chain saw if off just above the live branch if their are splits and cracks in the trunk that you cant get rid of by the above cut your looses, tourch the tree and buy another .If the one bottom branch that is alive is larger but verticle as i would assume and you keep the tree it will be a novelty to some interesting to others and laughable to many unless you can bend it upright5 to become a leader. I know a love for a special tree can be deep but at a certain point you got to let it go IMHO David

OOOPS I ment horizontal ( NOT vertical) it's that darn dislexia ...sorry "if branch is HORIZONTAL"
