This is entirely normal - nothing to be concerned about :-) The new growth on my containerized Shigitatsu sawa looks very similar and if you do a web image search, you can find other examples:

Also, I would not be overly concerned about a few insect holes in the foliage, especially this late in the season. And you want to be very careful what you spray on JM foliage - it is very sensitive (even more so with the pale reticulated forms like Shigitatsu sawa). Even insecticidal soap can cause a phytotoxic reaction.

Thanks gardengal! I was just worried because a lot of the new leaves look like those two in the middle - misshapen, and gnarled, and j haven't seen any progress in them for a few weeks. Is that picture you provided yours? How long did it take all the leaves to have a consistent shape like that? As you can see in mine, some reticulations on the leaves look to be barely holding on :/.

Kenny, I am not sure what your concerns are :-) Nothing I can see from your photo causes me worry. Small, young trees often do not develop full size foliage nor do the leaves necessarily look the same as that on more mature trees. This is because JM's can produce both juvenile and adult foliage. Young trees tend towards more juvenile foliage, gradually leaving it for more adult foliage as they age. But even mature trees can produce some juvenile growth, especially with second season or midsummer growth.

I don't see anything that looks especially "gnarly" - just some smallish and little bit misshapen leaves. But then the photo I provided shows leaves very similar (And no, it is not my photo).
